BRIEF HISTORY

Farming center north of Modesto on Highway 99. Original settlement called Murphy's Ferry until coming of railroad in 1870. A year later Murphy built a warehouse and a side track was installed for convenience of farmers in shipping grain. This was called Murphy's Switch. In 1875, the community was granted a post office, but a new name had to be chosen because there already was a Murphy's post office in Calaveras County. A Spanish word, "Salida", was chosen and this implied that the new town was "near the water", it being the closest town to the south bank of the Stanislaus River. (Joseph Burton Vasche)
